Which servo should I choose?

FAQ: Do I need the standard corvette servo or the servo with the longer pin? And what about the 4th gear billet servo?

If you have a 700R4, 4L60E, 4L65E, or 4L70E automatic transmission, and want to upgrade your servo, you have several different options available to you:

  1. Corvette servo
  2. Corvette servo with longer pin
  3. Billet 4th gear servo

First, you can install just the standard corvette servo found here

With this servo, right away you’ll notice faster and firmer 1-2 shifts and even slightly better 2-3 shifts. Also, this servo will give your transmission 50% more apply pressure, just what you need to keep from burning your transmission up under heavy load situations.

The corvette servo is a great upgrade for not a lot of money, and you do not need to take the transmission out to install it. Our servo comes with two rigid seals and two rubber seals, as well as 3 pages of instructions for easy and detailed installation.

Second, you can install the standard corvette servo with the longer pin found here

With this package, you get the corvette servo outlined above and you get the longer pin all in one package. The included longer-than-stock servo pin does a great job of getting your band adjusted to the right clearance. It’s almost more important to get the right clearance than it is to change to the corvette servo.

Not sure if you need the longer pin? You can test your clearance by pushing in on your servo cover. If you notice that it moves in between 1/8″-1/4″, you know you need the longer pin. This is way too much travel, as the clearance should be closer to 1/16″.

Also, since the servo isn’t traveling as far before it applies the band, the 1-2 and even the 3-4 shift will be much quicker.

Finally, you can install the standard corvette servo, and purchase the 4th gear billet servo found here

With these two products, you’ll get all the benefit of the corvette servo, as well as better holding capacity in 4th gear. Plus, if you go this route, you won’t need to buy the servo with the longer pin.  The reason is because this 4th gear billet servo is manufactured with tighter tolerances, which tightens up the clearance issue that the longer pin typically tackles.

If money allows, Oregon Performance Transmission recommends purchasing the standard corvette servo, as well as the 4th gear billet servo.

If you have any questions about servos, or which combination might be right for your vehicle, please do not hesitate to contact us at sales@oregonperformancetransmission.com for more information.

FAQ: Torque Converter Splines

faq-vesta

Q: I need a new converter for my 700R4 and I want to make sure I order the right one. I see you offer a 27-spline, and a 30-spline option. Which one do I need?

A: Sometimes just knowing your transmission year, or your casting number on your transmission case, is not enough to ensure you are ordering the correct converter. The reason is because a popular upgrade on the 1982-1984 transmission is to upgrade the 27-spline shaft to the later, stronger, 30-spline shaft. This is why it’s a good idea to count your splines just to be sure.

Q: Which splines do I count — the inner or the outer ones?

A: You will want to count the outer splines on your existing converter — the smaller ones that are closest to the end of the output shaft. These can be difficult to count so you will need to take your time.

If you have any questions about which converter will work best with your application, please feel free to email us at any time at sales@oregonperformancetransmission

Do I need a thermal bypass?

Fall is a great time to consider installing a transmission cooler in your vehicle. For many people, the busyness of summer travel has settled down, the kids are back in school, and there’s finally time to work on vehicle projects before the snow and freezing temperatures hit.

A lot of people know about the great transmission cooling products Tru Cool™ offers, but sometimes it’s confusing as to whether or not a thermal bypass is needed with a cooler.

Our most popular transmission cooler from Tru-Cool™, part number LNG-47391, has a sister cooler under part number LNG-4739. The only difference between the two? The 4739 comes with a thermal bypass, while the 47391 does not.

So what is a thermal bypass?

The thermal bypass is a small added valve that goes in the transmission line.  When the transmission is cold, the thermal bypass will “bypass” the cooler so it can bring the transmission up to operating temperature more quickly.

Do I need a thermal bypass?

A bypass is not something that is typically needed unless you live in a fairly cold climate; for example, a place where temperatures in the winter are regularly below 32°F.

I already own a cooler but it doesn’t have a bypass.  Can I buy the bypass separately and add it on?

Yes.  The bypass works very well with other coolers, such as the Tru Cool™ 49211 cooler.  So if you already have a cooler you like, adding the bypass on is definitely okay.

Where can I buy a thermal bypass?

We sell the bypass individually under part number LNG-4739P6

If you would like to purchase a cooler with a bypass, we sell that package under part number LNG-4739.

LNG-4739

If you do not need the thermal bypass but do need a great transmission cooler, and have the available space, we have that product under part number LNG-47391.

Transmission Failure and Snowplowing

7437758
Snowplow season is upon us for many across the country.

Plowing and towing at low speeds with an automatic transmission can produce a huge amount of heat, and when it comes to transmission life and longevity, heat is the number one enemy.

If you find yourself needing to rebuild or upgrade your transmission this winter, and you will be plowing or towing, we really recommend our high performance rebuild kits. Our HP kits come with Red lined clutches and Black Kolene steel plates. These clutches are specifically designed to handle 300% more heat than the factory type clutches, and considerably more than the HD high energy clutches. We have HP rebuild kits from Oregon Performance Transmission for the Ford, Chevy, and Dodge transmissions, as well as top quality shift kits to compliment your rebuild.

Ford and GM join forces to produce new 10-speed automatic transmission.

Beginning in 2017 we will begin seeing this beast of a transmission that was recently developed in partnership by Ford and GM. While the name of the transmission has yet to be finalized, it’s looking like Ford will call this the 10R80 transmission, while Chevy is looking at the 10L90 name. This new 10-speed transmission is modeled in part off the Hydra-matic automatic transmission series. We will be seeing a lower first gear compared to the prior 8-speed from GM, 7th gear being 1:1, and 8-10th gears being overdrive speeds with 10th being a ratio of .64.

The 6L series transmissions had a lot of complaints about shift quality. While this definitely improved with the 8L series, they have pushed this 10L series to an entirely new level of shift quality, clearly evidenced by this video of the 2017 650 HP ZL1 Camaro. The Camaro ran an outstanding 7:29.6 lap time around the Nurburgring, which was more than 11 seconds faster than the previous generation ZL1.

We hear this new tranny will be in some of the Ford trucks in 2017, including the Raptor, and should possibly make it’s way into the Mustang by 2018. On the GM side, it will be starting in the ZL1 Camaro in 2017, and is rumored to be filtering out into trucks, SUV’s and possibly the Cadillac V-series cars.

Stay tuned!

2004R High Performance Options

Looking for products to upgrade your 200-4R automatic transmission? Here are the most popular products we sell for the 2004R transmission:

Rebuild kit

Oregon Performance Transmission offers two rebuild kit options for the 2004R automatic transmission:  a standard rebuild kit and a high performance version.

The high performance 2004R rebuild kit can be found here under part number OPT-2004R-RBHP, or by clicking on the photograph below.

OPT-2004R-RBHP

OPT-2004R-RBHP

This HP master rebuild kit includes:

  • A Transtec overhaul set with rubber seals, gaskets, o-rings, metal clad seals, and Teflon sealing rings, needed to complete your rebuild.
  • All Raybestos Red HP friction clutch plates
  • All Alto black Kolene Steel plates
  • New fluid filter
  • Kevlar Intermediate – 2nd gear band
  • Bushings for the pump and case

This kit is performance rated and will handle 300% more heat and horsepower, torque and abuse than the standard clutches.  The steel plates are Kolene coated with a special friction material that keeps them from slipping like the smooth steel are prone to do. This will give you a more positive clutch engagement.

Shift kit

The shift kit we typically recommend to go along with the high performance rebuild kit is the HD2 kit from Transgo. You can find it here under part number TRG-200-4R-HD2.

trg-2004r-hd2

TRG-2004R-HD2

This newly upgraded high performance shift kit fits year 1981-up and contains the following:

  • Billet aluminum 2nd gear HP servo
  • .500 boost valve
  • Large low-reverse boost valve

Full installation instructions are included with this kit

The new dual feed 3rd gear circuit increases direct clutch holding capacity by 200%.  This kit works for both street and strip use and can be installed with the transmission in the car.

Stator Support

From the factory the 2004R transmission had trouble with the stator support wearing out prematurely. For that reason it is always recommended to upgrade to this heat treated style if you still have the stock one in your transmission. You can find the upgraded stator support here under part number NTP-45812R.

NTP-45812R

Our customers are routinely impressed with ATSG manuals and often recommend them to friends.  Here are a few recently received customer reviews:

“Really good book on transmission specifications and assembly”

“Nice manual, quality product”

“Just as promised.  Great book!”

“Everything I needed and then some.  Very accurate”

What is the difference between the blue cover book and the green cover book?

The blue cover book is the standard transmission rebuild manual.  This book will be your go-to guide for understanding and performing the process of transmission rebuilding.  If you are planning to rebuild your transmission and do not already have this manual, this is the one you will want and need.

The green cover book the update manual.  This manual is intended for diagnostic work and/or troubleshooting codes.  While a few transmission updates are included in this manual, it relies primarily upon, and often refers back to, the original blue cover manual for rebuilding instructions.  Many DIY-er’s will not need this manual as it is most frequently used by professional shops.

What about these CD-ROM discs?

Some of the ATSG manuals are no longer available in paperback form.  Some obsolete books and/or less popular books have moved from book format to a mini-disc CD-ROM.  These discs are easy to use and will fit in the small, inner disc circle of any computer disc drive.

Our ATSG service manuals now qualify for free U.S. shipping!

As always, should you have any questions about ATSG transmission products or need assistance in identifying your transmission, please feel free to contact Oregon Performance Transmission at salesdesk@optsales.com

Repeated exposure to heat is the number one reason automatic transmissions fail. One way to extend the life of your transmission and avoid, or at least prolong a costly rebuild is to install a quality transmission cooler.

One of our consistent best-selling items is the Tru-Cool 47391 transmission cooler from Long Manufacturing – Dana Corporation. The 47391 cooler is rated at 40,000 GVW (gross vehicle weight) and measures 8.5″ x 22.75″ x 1.25″. This is a low pressure drop (LPD) unit with 3/8″ inverted flare fittings. This is truly the ultimate cooler for heavy towing and is a must for heavy duty applications, including racing. All parts and instructions are included to mount and plumb this cooler. Retail price is $200+. This cooler comes with a manufacturer’s limited lifetime warranty.

Tru-Cool 47391 40,000 GVW Transmission Cooler (part number LNG-47391)

LNG-47391

Installation and compatibility information:

This cooler comes with all mounting hardware and fittings as well as approximately 30” of transmission hose. The cooler has 3/8” inlet and outlet fittings on the ends so you would typically use this with applications where you have 3/8” line.

The 47391 is 2 feet wide; it is a physically large cooler and it will need a lot of space. In terms of compatibility, it is not so much the transmission you need to be concerned about, it is whether or not you have the physical space to accommodate the cooler.  Typically these are meant for trucks and SUV’s for towing and off-road use.  Our Chevy, Ford, Dodge, and Jeep customers rave about them.

If you do not have 3/8” line, (for example the Chevy Duramax with the Alison transmission), you would either need to buy different fittings to adapt, or go with another cooler meant for ½” line. Tru-Cool’s H7B cooler is meant for ½” line and is a high end cooler that can actually be used as an engine oil cooler as well.  It does not come with mounting hardware, fittings or hose, so you would need to buy those items separately.

Tru-Cool H7B 29,200 BTU Transmission Cooler (part number LNG-H7B)

LNG-H7B

If you live in an area that routinely experiences temperatures at or below 32F, you should consider using the Tru-Cool 40,000 GVW cooler that comes with the external thermal bypass. As with the LNG-47391, this cooler has 3/8″ inverted flare fittings on the ends, measures 8.5″ x 22.75″ x 1.25″ and comes with mounting hardware, fittings and transmission hose. It also includes the external thermal bypass valve that allows the transmission fluid to bypass the cooler until the transmission comes up to operating temperatures (approx. 180F +/-).

LNG-4739

In addition to the products outlined above, we have an extensive selection of Tru-Cool transmission coolers available here at Oregon Performance Transmission. We offer many additional sizes of coolers as well as units made for smaller vehicles.

As always, if you have any questions or need assistance finding the right cooler for you, please do not hesitate to contact us at salesdesk@optsales.com or visit us on the web at www.oregonperformancetransmission.com.

The Corvette Servo

Corvette Servo (part number NTP-K51828C)

TRG-7-2p

Arguably one of the most inexpensive, yet most rewarding upgrades to your 700R4 or 4L60E (4L65E, 4L70E) transmission is the corvette servo. Right away you will notice faster and firmer 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. The corvette servo will give your transmission 50% more apply pressure, which is just what you need to keep from burning your transmission up under heavy load situations. The corvette servo is a must for any performance vehicle, for towing, RV, or off road use, and is a positive upgrade for any 700R4 or 4L60E transmission. Our servo is easy to install and can be done with the transmission in the vehicle. The servo comes with all of the necessary seals for installation; including the outer cover o-ring, as well as three pages of instructions with diagrams. If you have already decided to install a corvette servo, your next question might be whether or not you should use the corvette servo with the longer pin instead. Here’s how to decide.

Corvette Servo with Longer Pin (part number OPT-CV-Pin)NTP-CorvetteWP

After a short amount of time, by 30,000 miles or so, the band has been broken in and the servo travel has increased a lot.  Too much servo travel can cause a delay in shifting, a longer 1-2 and 3-4 shift, as well as a slide-and-bump-into-gear type shift.  By 100,000 or more miles, the band is wearing out and then you are at the point where the servo almost cannot travel far enough. Once it is beyond the travel of the servo, it will burn up the transmission.  The longer pin is designed to take up that slack and prevent the servo travel.    You can actually test your current travel now.  Just get underneath it and with a pry bar, push in on the cover of your servo.  If it goes in more than 1/8″, you definitely want the longer pin.  The clearance should be closer to around 1/16″.Please note:  If you are installing, or already have installed, a shift kit, you will likely not need a longer servo pin.  Most shift kits are designed to address the servo travel issue already.Another option to consider is the 4th gear Billet Super Servo.

Billet Super Servo 4th Gear Apply Piston & Cover (part number SUP-K034)SUP-K034

The 4th gear billet super servo is a tremendous product that addresses the 3-4 shift.  You will find better holding capacity in 4th gear, as well as an overall firmer 3-4 shift. The servo has an excellent design that includes a lip seal on piston that allows for much less leakage, as well as a  proper 4-3 (no drag) release. To top it off, this servo is constructed of billet aluminum and is built to last. The 4th gear super servo in conjunction with the corvette servo will solidify your transmission shifts from start to finish while giving overall life to the transmission and vehicle. In some cases, we have noticed during installation that the 4th gear servo does address some of the clearance problems as well as decreasing some of the servo travel;  basically eliminating the need for the longer servo pin.

As always, if you have any other questions or need any product recommendations, please feel free to contact us at salesdesk@optsales.com.

Product review

Recent review of our Powerglide Master Rebuild kit (part number OPT-PG-RB)

“My company purchased one of these kits for a customer’s 1963 corvette…It is by far the most complete set to do an overhaul. It is my first dig into a powerglide, and I’m glad that I convinced them to go for the better kit, instead of piecing it together”.

-Adam

Thank you for the feedback, Adam. We appreciate your business!

Recommended products for the 4R70W AODE 4R75E 4R75W transmission

Looking for products to upgrade your 4R70W transmission? Below is a list of the most popular products we sell for the 4R70W AODE 4R75E 4R75W transmission.

We offer two different rebuild kits, a standard rebuild kit and a high performance version.  The standard rebuild kit is listed on our website under part number  ORE-AODE-RB, and the high performance kit is part number ORE-AODE-RB-HP.  The standard kit includes everything you see in the photograph below; clutches, steel plates, overdrive and reverse bands, the filter, the Transtec gasket set and the front and rear bushings.

OPT-AODE-4R70W-RB

The high performance kit includes all of the same products, however, the clutches are the high performance Red Raybestos brand and the steel plates are the black Kolene steels.  Also, both the overdrive and the reverse band are in Kevlar with the HP kit.

OPT-AODE-4R70W-RBHP

With every rebuild,  we always recommend a good shift kit as a compliment to the new transmission.  For the 4R70W AODE 4R75E 4R75W transmission, the Transgo shift kit has proven to be a very effective upgrade.  We have it listed under part number  TRG-SKAODE.  The shift kit helps address the overdrive band failure in this transmission as well as cleaning up the shifting, giving cleaner, more firm shifts.  It increases the lube to some of the bearing areas, eliminating the bearing failures.  It definitely helps keep the new transmission from burning up.

TRG-SK-AODE

TRG-sk-aode-4r70w

We also recommend installing a new separator plate with your rebuild.  The Superior “Super Tough Plate” saves time and money by preventing costly No-Go’s and comebacks in the Late 2000-up 4R70W AODE 4R75E 4R75W transmissions by helping to eliminate plate cracking and cross leaks caused by constant pounding from the2-3 Accumulator Piston Spring Retainer on the stock separator plate.  We have it listed under part number SUP-K092.

SUP-K092

If you do not already have one and you plan to do this rebuild yourself, we highly recommend the ATSG transmission rebuild manual for the AODE transmission.  You can find it under part number ATSG-AOD-E.  It is a paperback manual filled with exploded view diagrams, diagnosis and rebuilding instructions.  We also carry the update handbook for the Ford AODE 4R70W 4R75E 4R75W transmission under part number ATSG-AOD-EU. It covers all changes that have occurred from 1992-UP including parts affected by the changes, interchangeability, and part numbers.

These manuals are a must for any DIY-er.  Even the professional shops use these high-quality ATSG manuals.

  2. TCC solenoid, part number NTP-47870L
  3. Pressure control solenoid, part number NTP-47879M

Instead of looking for electronics a la carte, we do also carry a complete electronics kit for the AODE 4R70W 4R75E 4R75W transmission, part number OPT-AODE-ELEC.  This kit will contain the internal wiring harness, case connector, dual pack shift solenoids, torque converter clutch solenoid (TCC), electronic pressure control solenoid (EPC), the temperature sensor (included with the internal harness in years 1998 and up) the output speed sensor and the turbine speed sensor (in years 2004 and up).  This kit makes it easy to purchase everything you need to change out your electronics in one complete package.

Finally, one of the problems with these transmissions is they don’t get the end play correct so everything is sliding back and forth uncontrollably which can cause a transmission to burn up way too soon.  It is highly recommended to get rid of excess slop in the transmission by using this selective thrust washer kit, part number NTP-K47940.

All of the products mentioned above are in stock and available for shipment right away.  Because there are slight differences in products based on your transmission year, be sure to ask if you have any questions about your application and parts compatibility.  We are always available via email at salesdesk@optsales.com.
