Ford and GM join forces to produce new 10-speed automatic transmission.
Beginning in 2017 we will begin seeing this beast of a transmission that was recently developed in partnership by Ford and GM. While the name of the transmission has yet to be finalized, it’s looking like Ford will call this the 10R80 transmission, while Chevy is looking at the 10L90 name. This new 10-speed transmission is modeled in part off the Hydra-matic automatic transmission series. We will be seeing a lower first gear compared to the prior 8-speed from GM, 7th gear being 1:1, and 8-10th gears being overdrive speeds with 10th being a ratio of .64.
The 6L series transmissions had a lot of complaints about shift quality. While this definitely improved with the 8L series, they have pushed this 10L series to an entirely new level of shift quality, clearly evidenced by this video of the 2017 650 HP ZL1 Camaro. The Camaro ran an outstanding 7:29.6 lap time around the Nurburgring, which was more than 11 seconds faster than the previous generation ZL1.
We hear this new tranny will be in some of the Ford trucks in 2017, including the Raptor, and should possibly make it’s way into the Mustang by 2018. On the GM side, it will be starting in the ZL1 Camaro in 2017, and is rumored to be filtering out into trucks, SUV’s and possibly the Cadillac V-series cars.
Stay tuned!
