Do I need a thermal bypass?

Fall is a great time to consider installing a transmission cooler in your vehicle. For many people, the busyness of summer travel has settled down, the kids are back in school, and there’s finally time to work on vehicle projects before the snow and freezing temperatures hit.

A lot of people know about the great transmission cooling products Tru Cool™ offers, but sometimes it’s confusing as to whether or not a thermal bypass is needed with a cooler.

Our most popular transmission cooler from Tru-Cool™, part number LNG-47391, has a sister cooler under part number LNG-4739. The only difference between the two? The 4739 comes with a thermal bypass, while the 47391 does not.

So what is a thermal bypass?

The thermal bypass is a small added valve that goes in the transmission line.  When the transmission is cold, the thermal bypass will “bypass” the cooler so it can bring the transmission up to operating temperature more quickly.

Do I need a thermal bypass?

A bypass is not something that is typically needed unless you live in a fairly cold climate; for example, a place where temperatures in the winter are regularly below 32°F.

I already own a cooler but it doesn’t have a bypass.  Can I buy the bypass separately and add it on?

Yes.  The bypass works very well with other coolers, such as the Tru Cool™ 49211 cooler.  So if you already have a cooler you like, adding the bypass on is definitely okay.

Where can I buy a thermal bypass?

We sell the bypass individually under part number LNG-4739P6

If you would like to purchase a cooler with a bypass, we sell that package under part number LNG-4739.

If you do not need the thermal bypass but do need a great transmission cooler, and have the available space, we have that product under part number LNG-47391.

Transmission Failure and Snowplowing

7437758
Snowplow season is upon us for many across the country.

Plowing and towing at low speeds with an automatic transmission can produce a huge amount of heat, and when it comes to transmission life and longevity, heat is the number one enemy.

If you find yourself needing to rebuild or upgrade your transmission this winter, and you will be plowing or towing, we really recommend our high performance rebuild kits. Our HP kits come with Red lined clutches and Black Kolene steel plates. These clutches are specifically designed to handle 300% more heat than the factory type clutches, and considerably more than the HD high energy clutches. We have HP rebuild kits from Oregon Performance Transmission for the Ford, Chevy, and Dodge transmissions, as well as top quality shift kits to compliment your rebuild.

Our high performance rebuild kits can be found by clicking on the popular transmission application links below.

Even though it’s winter and cold outside, if you are snowplowing or towing, we strongly recommend installing a transmission cooler as well. Our best-selling transmission cooler is the 47391 40,000 GVW Low Pressure Drop cooler from Tru-Cool. This cooler is a work horse and will definitely help keep your transmission temperatures low. You can find it on our website, https://www.oregonperformancetransmission.com under part number LNG-47391.

Smart ways to extend the life of your transmission

Repeated exposure to heat is the number one reason automatic transmissions fail. One way to extend the life of your transmission and avoid, or at least prolong a costly rebuild is to install a quality transmission cooler.

One of our consistent best-selling items is the Tru-Cool 47391 transmission cooler from Long Manufacturing – Dana Corporation. The 47391 cooler is rated at 40,000 GVW (gross vehicle weight) and measures 8.5″ x 22.75″ x 1.25″. This is a low pressure drop (LPD) unit with 3/8″ inverted flare fittings. This is truly the ultimate cooler for heavy towing and is a must for heavy duty applications, including racing. All parts and instructions are included to mount and plumb this cooler. Retail price is $200+. This cooler comes with a manufacturer’s limited lifetime warranty.

Installation and compatibility information:

This cooler comes with all mounting hardware and fittings as well as approximately 30” of transmission hose. The cooler has 3/8” inlet and outlet fittings on the ends so you would typically use this with applications where you have 3/8” line.

The 47391 is 2 feet wide; it is a physically large cooler and it will need a lot of space. In terms of compatibility, it is not so much the transmission you need to be concerned about, it is whether or not you have the physical space to accommodate the cooler.  Typically these are meant for trucks and SUV’s for towing and off-road use.  Our Chevy, Ford, Dodge, and Jeep customers rave about them.

If you do not have 3/8” line, (for example the Chevy Duramax with the Alison transmission), you would either need to buy different fittings to adapt, or go with another cooler meant for ½” line. Tru-Cool’s H7B cooler is meant for ½” line and is a high end cooler that can actually be used as an engine oil cooler as well.  It does not come with mounting hardware, fittings or hose, so you would need to buy those items separately.

If you live in an area that routinely experiences temperatures at or below 32F, you should consider using the Tru-Cool 40,000 GVW cooler that comes with the external thermal bypass. As with the LNG-47391, this cooler has 3/8″ inverted flare fittings on the ends, measures 8.5″ x 22.75″ x 1.25″ and comes with mounting hardware, fittings and transmission hose. It also includes the external thermal bypass valve that allows the transmission fluid to bypass the cooler until the transmission comes up to operating temperatures (approx. 180F +/-).
